With Covid sufferers estimated to be millions of people worldwide, one New Delhi physician warned that the problems associated with hair fall have doubled. Shahin Nooreyezdan, a consultant for cosmetic and plastic surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, said that hair fall is caused by swelling in the back and can last up to three months. He told Isolezwe: “The inflammation of COVID-19 has had a profound effect here.”
“Deficiency caused by poor nutrition, sudden changes in weight, hormonal disorders and decreased levels of vitamins D and B12 are some of the major causes of massive hair fall after COVID-19.”
Telogen effluvium (TE) is when a person experiences hair fall due to a change in the number of actively growing hair.
This leads to hair loss on the scalp, which can be limited to one area or everywhere.
In severe cases in TE, hair loss will spread to other body parts such as eyelashes.
There have been a lot of studies suggesting that hair fall is a sign of a long Covid, even though it is not listed in the long list of NHS symptoms.
A study published in January 2021 by the medical journal The Lancet found that 22 percent of patients had hair fall in six months after being discharged from a hospital in Wuhan, where the virus first appeared.
An online study earlier this year that surveyed 1,500 Covid survivors found that 27 percent of the population had experienced some form of hair loss.
One expert told the International Business Times that the cause of hair fall occurs because hair growth is halted due to infection
Causes of hair fall can be due to overuse, diet, stress, weight fall, hormonal changes and severe fever are all risk factors.
Dr. Shahin pointed to the fact that some people also struggle with diet and Covid, which can reduce their nutrient reserves, explaining why hair sometimes appears.
It is important to understand the difference between TE hair loss and anagen effluvium (AE).
AE hair loss can catch on very quickly and is very noticeable when the hair falls out.
People who are being treated for cancer treatment or taking anti-cancer drugs are more likely to lose AE hair.
Both TE and AE hair loss is not permanent and hair loss may occur within six months to a year.
